Ontario Tire Stewardship is announcing a Consultation session for registered Collectors, Haulers, Processors and Recycled Product Manufacturers on Wednesday, July 10th, from 9am – 12pm at the Toronto Airport Marriott. As part of the continued evolution of the Ontario Used Tires program, and based on the necessity for OTS to deliver the program as efficiently as possible, OTS is looking to implement a series of changes to the existing incentive rates and programs to improve overall system efficiency, support a fair and competitive market, ensure the on-going financial stability of OTS and continue to deliver diversion results which exceed all objectives.

In addition the consultation will provide some additional information, to the best of OTS’s ability, on the proposed Waste Reduction Act and the Waste Reduction Strategy document, which set out a future state for waste diversion in Ontario that is significantly different from the one we operate in today. Recognizing that the legislation is still being consulted on, and that passage is not a foregone conclusion, Ontario Tire Stewardship is nevertheless looking at its own operations and the Used Tires Program (UTP) overall to assess what changes might be required in order to be ready for an eventual transition to the new “Individual Producer Responsibility” model.

As always with changes to the program we want to communicate closely with our stakeholders on the implications of any changes may be, and the options which could be explored to mitigate these as needed. To achieve this we are planning a series of consultations through the summer, beginning with this session for all our operational stakeholders, and followed by yet-to-be-scheduled ones with individual groups in early August.
