Be the cause to a positive effect: five things to do around the house this Earth Day

04.04.16 | Blog

The forecast for the 46th annual Earth Day calls for a mix of sun and cloud, with a dusting of sustainability. It may sound cliché but protecting the earth is our responsibility. And as such, we must treat it with respect and work our hardest to keep it healthy so it can be enjoyed by us and future generations to come.

Taking care of the planet isn’t hard. All you need to do is start small and work your way up because trust us – even little things can have big impacts.  This Earth Day, make a commitment to living life more sustainably by trying these simple tips that make our earth a greener place. We promise you’ll notice a difference in your quality of life (as well as the savings in your pocket!).

  1. Compost – Whoever told you that it’s easy to turn organic kitchen waste into nutrient rich soil wasn’t talking garbage. Install a compost bin to collect your organic waste and in a few months, you will have sustainable nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Not only will your banana peel not end up in a landfill, but you’ll also save some cash by not having to buy fertilizer – and hopefully you’ll have some fresh veggies to show for it too!

  2. CFL bulb

Shine a different light – If your home is still equipped with old-timey incandescent light bulbs, you might be burning through your hard earned cash (and a lot of energy). Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs not only last longer but burn brighter using less energy too. A 14 watt bulb projects the same amount of light as a 65 watt incandescent bulb, which over time, saves you lots on your energy bill. And don’t forget—burnt out CFL bulbs don’t belong in the trash, take them to a local drop location.

  3. Tire ChangeRecycle your tires – Now that spring weather has arrived, the softer rubber that helped your winter tires cling to icy roads will wear down faster, so it’s time to switch them out for all-seasons—as soon as your local forecast shows an average daily high above about 5°C. Be sure to check the treads on your winter tires too, and if they’re no longer suitable for the roads, take them to your nearest tire collector.
  4. Let your laundry hang – Instead of putting your wet clothes in the dryer, hang them outside in the yard to let them air dry. You’ll find your clothes smell great, have less static, and the sun’s rays will naturally disinfect and brighten them.
  5. Unplug – Set a goal to put your gadgets aside for an hour each day. Have dinner with family and friends, read a book or go for a walk.  You’ll find that time flies and you might not even miss them!
