Daily Planet: Where Do Ontario Used Tires go?

22.03.12 | Blog

If you missed the segment about Ontario’s tire recycling industry on Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet last night (March 21), you missed a clear demonstration of just how far the industry has progressed, and how innovative it has become since the days of the Hagersville fire. It is made up of Collectors that are precision run, and Processors that invest in technologies that generate a reliable and consistent supply of crumb to an increasingly enterprising manufacturing base.

While preparing for the final portion of the segment featuring various tire derived products, we had minimal time to set up for the patio shot. But with a little help from another OTS staff member and the genius of envirotile’s simple clip system, we had the 20 x 14 ft. area ready for filming in no time. Daryl Erdman of Multy Home, the manufacturer of envirotile™,  once told me you could purchase their patio tiles at Home Depot in the afternoon and be drinking cocktails on your new patio the same night. Now I know firsthand that this is true.

While not all the products we filmed with Daily Planet made it into the final segment, the show producer, Carol kept commenting on the amazing array. In the end, the show’s format simply didn’t allow her to showcase them all.

The good news is, if you would like more information about tire derived products and Ontario’s tire recycling industry, you can now download our new Consumer Guide. By browsing through its pages, you’ll learn how these products can help you live a more sustainable lifestyle. At the same time, you can become part of the solution that keeps used tires out of Ontario’s landfills.

The Daily Planet commentator made one statement that I particularly agree with and that is that the Used Tires program is an industry leader. Ontarian’s should be very proud of this, and the part they play in its continued success.
