Summer is officially here! Cottages, BBQs, hiking— the options to keep you busy are endless. Whether you like views of the water, winding through majestic mountains or simply enjoying the breeze while coasting through farmland, a good old fashioned road trip is always a great way to get out and explore this beautiful country– and it can also make for a cost-effective vacation.

While you may be tempted to just pile everything and everyone in the car and take-off, be sure to plan ahead to avoid any surprises along the road. Equip yourself by following these road trip tips and cruise by any hurdles along the way:

  • Road conditions: Half the fun of road trips is going off track and getting lost while you’re at it. However, if you’re strapped on time, make sure to plan ahead and check for road closures, conditions and construction information before you head out. Remember that you can always tune in to local radio stations to get up-to-the-minute updates on road conditions.
  • Remember PART: Before venturing off, check the pressure, alignment, rotation and tread of your tires. A road trip is only as great as the tires that get you from point A to B, so make sure your tires are in optimal condition. Oh, and never forget the spare!

  • Are we there yet?: If you’re driving with kids, you’re bound to get one frequently asked question: Are we there yet? Avoid it altogether by keeping your kids busy and playing road trip games like I Spy or 20 Questions. Or surprise them with a creative road trip kit complete with colouring books, stickers and snacks, and they’ll be the best travel companions you could ask for.
  • Safety first: You may be the most diligent, safe and conscientious driver but trouble may only be a turn away. Be prepared by packing an emergency kit with first aid equipment, fire extinguishers, flares, snacks and more to ensure the safety of yourself and all your travel companions.
